how to connect to Jira with PAT and Powershell or Curl

Hello,

I am having Problems connecting to Jira Server (8.20.2) with the PAT key. Over Powershell or Curl.

It is worth noting that the connection works when I use the Username/Password combination

These are the commands I am using:

Hi @ChristopherChilds 

I understand that you're trying to make REST API calls to Jira Cloud, using the basic auth.  However given your error messages here it looks like the authorization part is not being sent in exactly the way Jira is expecting.  Hence Jira does not see your authorization.

Check out our guide in Basic auth for REST APIs.  It has steps you can follow to make sure that you encode these credentials correctly.  From looking at your example, it looks like in the powershell you are encoding the credentials, but your code has:

ASCII.GetBytes($pair))

where as our example has

$Text = ‘user@example.com:api_token_string’ 
$Bytes = [System.Text.Encoding]::UTF8.GetBytes($Text) 
$EncodedText = [Convert]::ToBase64String($Bytes) 
$EncodedText

Your example seems to be using ASCII, but we're expecting UTF8 during this conversion.  I've see this slight difference come into play when converting strings between text and the base64 encode we are expecting.

Try that and let me know if this helps.
