JQL query for getting parent issue based on child

Question

Hi all,

How can one build a query that returns the parent tickets of a child ticket based on the assignee?

My request is simple but I can't find a way to make it work.

Basically I want all parent tickets that have a sub-task task assigned to a group of people

Any idea how this can be done?

I'm trying something like this:

project in (XYZ, ABC) AND (assignee in (X, Y, Z) OR issue in sql("issuetype = Sub-task and assignee in (X, Y, Z)") )

but keep getting an error:

Expected a SQL+JQL saved query ID as input. Current Input Value= "issuetype = Sub-task and assignee in (X, Y, Z)"

I guess I could  not find a good example of how to use SQL inside the query itself

I also tried saving my subquery as a filter and then try to use it in the query but also did not work.

project in (XYZ) AND (assignee in (X, Y, Z) OR issue in sql("27753") )

No saved SQL+JQL query found for the id: 27753

How does one know the query ID?

Regarding your first issue, using a subfilter is not supported out of the box. You would need a third party app for you instance to extend the search capabilities to provide that.

Regarding the suggestion to use "parentOf", that is also not a supported function out of the box for Jira Server, and would require addition of a third party app.

ok thanks for trying.

I think at first I may be be miss understanding the use of "parentOf" because my query and information I got is at the child level and not at the parent level.
meaning from the child issue I want to find the parent issues not the other way around.

Still I tried and anyway it seems the syntax does not work

seems the parent off requires JIRA keys not a JQL query

Every time I try to do something not basic in JIRA it always fails so I really wonder if either my company is very cheap and we get nothing out of atlasian or why do people like this software so much. We always have to go back to excel to have proper status reporting and things like that

You can only achieve this using some third-party Add-on like JQL Search Extensions for Jira & reports or JQL Booster Pack

It's available for both Data Center and cloud both and has a lot of richly built-in queries.

For your case, you can use the following query and it will return all issues where sub-task assignee = abc

issue in parentOf("assignee= abc")

If you want to search only those stories whose assignee=abc then use following

type = story and issue in parentOf("assignee= abc")
