How can I get to the logs that show database connection errors?

I tried looking through the catalina.out logs but there is an awful lot of data there. Is there a place that reports only database connection errors? Or some specific grep ? The problem is that I do not know the date when the problem occurred.

The application logs usually catch database errors, not the application-server logs (i.e. look in Jira logs, not Tomcats).  A search (case insensitive) for SQL through <Jira home>/logs/*.log should get you started
