I am trying to build a min start date across all children of an Epic using min{join#subtree#distinct{if(est._start_date="","",est._start_date)}}
I cannot find a way to ignore null dates and I keep getting non-date results (16079004000)
Any thoughts?
Hi J,
The min{} function should ignore nulls all on its own. So you should be able to just do this as your formula:min{start_date}
On the Epic level this will find the minimum start date (including the epic's start date). If you want to only consider the child dates below the epic level you could do
min#children{start_date}
Then to get your dates to format correctly you can change the format section at the bottom of the formula. By default it will just represent them as numbers because under the covers the date is really just a big number.
It sounds like you might be trying to do a bit more than this, so let me know how you want to use that min date once you have it, and if there are more pieces to this question.
Cheers,

Thank you for getting back to me!
The problem is the date is inconsistently showing as numbers vs date. For 95% of the date calculations the result is a date...for the rest it is showing numbers as seen below.
I can see no patterns to identify cause- changing dates to a new date doesn't help, removing dates doesn't help, changing the format of the field to numbers and then back to date doesn't help.
Are there any reasons why the date would not be formatted correctly?
I would file a ticket with our support team. you can email them at support@almworks.com, or file a ticket at https://support.almworks.com

Update- after reviewing a lot of records, the issue appears to be if the JIRA date is earlier than all of the children the formula fails (equal dates does not cause error). Other than a long discussion about proper data maintenance any thoughts on how to update the formula so that if the JIRA date is earlier than the children use the JIRA date and ignore the formula?
Example: Key-1185 start date Jan 30, 2018, 10 linked JIRA's and earliest child start date is July 14, 2020. Failure is caused by children date < JIRA date.
