What's the best way to migrate from Github Server to Bitbucket Cloud?

We've done a number of departmental migrations from Github's web-based system using the built-in tool in Bitbucket Cloud.

We now have a requirement to migrate repos that live on a Github Enterprise (on-prem) server.

I've seen suggestions to write a script that will do it, but am wondering if there are any other ways.

Hi Esther,

Sorry if my message wasn't very clear.

You will indeed need to make the on-premise server accessible.

One way is to do that is to make the server accessible from anywhere over the internet (if it isn't already).

If you don't want to make the server accessible from anywhere over the internet, you can whitelist on your firewall only the Bitbucket IP addresses.

This way, Bitbucket will be able to connect to your server, for the purposes of the import, but connections to your server from elsewhere (IPs that are not whitelisted in your firewall) will not be possible.

Thanks, Theodora. I'm a little confused, though. Bitbucket Cloud IP addresses are already publicly accessible. How does whitelisting them make my on-prem server accessible to Cloud? The import tool runs from the Cloud side, so it seems like I'd need to make the on-prem server accesssible, not the other way around.

Hi Esther,

If the server is not accessible from the internet, one idea would be to whitelist (perhaps temporarily) Bitbucket Cloud IPs (see here) and then you should be able to import the repos with the importer:

* https://bitbucket.org/repo/import

The importer will work with any Git-based hosting site, as long as Bitbucket can reach it.
