How to calculate total time spent while JIRA issue is blocked

Question

Hi All,

We are looking for suggestions on how to calculate blocked time in a JIRA issue.

Example, If ABC-123 jira issues is flagged twice with Impediment, we want to calculate the time spent while it was flagged to the time it was unflagged.

Has anyone tried it. We have scriptrunner and want to know if anyone has a working script for it.

Seems to be a clever approach, you mentioned: "automation rules for server", why do you think it would work only for the server and not for Jira Cloud?

I have been using the Enhanced Jira Query Tool with Google Spreadsheet, it is a free option and gets the information you want, through the field: SPECIAL: Issue Blocked Time. This tool is based on Jira REST API where you can get more information from Jira issues than using JQL. It takes some time to understand the tool, but it works pretty well, it hasn´t been updated since 2021, so I don't know if it works as expected as of now.

Our team at OBSS built Time in Status app for this exact need and it offers different solutions for different use cases.

Time in Status allows you to see how much time each issue spent on each status or assigned to each assignee. You can calculate averages and sums of those durations and count grouped by issue fields you select. (For example see the total InProgress time per Epic). You can also combine statuses into consolidated columns to see metrics like Block Time, Ticket Age, Cycle Time or Lead Time.

If you are moving the issue to a different status when blocked, you can use the Status Duration report of Time in Status to see the time spent on Blocked status.

If you are using the Flag/Impediment feature of Jira to mark blocked issues, you can use the Any Field Report of Time in Status to report on Impediment field times.

The app calculates its reports using already existing Jira issue histories so when you install the app, you don't need to add anything to your issue workflows and you can get reports on your past issues as well.

The app has Custom calendar support which means you can get your reports based on a 24/7 calendar or your custom business calendar. (This one is important because a 24/7 calendar in most cases shows misleading data. For example an issue created at 16:00 on Friday and was resolved at 09:00 on next Monday seems to stay open for 2,5 days but in terms of business hours, it is only a few hours. If you are specifying blocked issue with a specific status, you can try Status Time app developed by our team. t provides reports on how much time spent in each status as well as status entry dates and status transition count.

Once you enter your working calendar into the app, it takes your working schedule into account too. That is, "In Progress" time of an issue opened on Friday at 5 PM and closed on Monday at 9 AM, will be a few hours rather than 3 days. It has various other reports like assignee time, status entry dates, average/sum reports(eg. average in progress time per project).
