How to use Workflow statuses correctly and question regarding Project Setup

We are currently evaluating JIRA for supporting our Scrum methodology. We have the following main questions at this moment:

1. The GreenHopper Simplified Workflow defines a "To Do" and a "In Progress" stauts. Issues with status "To Do" do not appear in the back log. Does this essentially mean that "In Progress" does not mark the point in time when a developer actually starts working on stuff but merely when the we start estimating, etc.? Asked differently: There is no separate status for "planning / estimating" and "working on the actual issue"? How do we differentiate those two very different states?
   
   
2. We understand that we attach a Workflow to an Agile Board, however, when we do so, the Workflow attached to the Project itself does not automatically change. We have to manually switch the scheme in Project Administration. Is this the correct way?
   
   
3. Following up on question 2: Essentially, setting up a new Scrum project would involve the following steps: Create Project > Change Workflow Scheme to "GreenHopper Simplified Workflow" > Create Board > Select Type "Scrum". Is this correct or do we do anything wrong here?

Hi Ralf,

1 - On Rapid Board there is 2 different modes:

• Plan Mode: where you will do the estomation and planning, also where you start the sprint;
• Work Mode: where your developers will work on the issues;

2- You don't have to add a workflow to a Board, when you create a new Board on GH it will inherit the Project workflow; if you do add another workflow to the project you must map the workflow on the Board configuration;

3 - When creating a project you can associate any workflow and you can apply the "GreenHopper Simplified Workflow" after the Board creation; (as mentioned on step 2).

I hope it clarifies GH usage.
