How do you sort a table by a particular column, say of dates in numerical order?

Tables are sorted using the column header.One click ascending, another descending!
Yes, I see that, however, it it only giving me an option of "A-Z" sorting, while the column I want to sort is numerical dates... maybe they have to be actual numbers instead of text, in order to have a numerical sorting option?
