Can I use the official Atlassian MCP with OpenID or API Key?

Everything I've seen about the official Atlassian MCP indicates that you would use an SSO authentication flow. We do use this with IDE-based AI tools like roo-code and cursor. However, I want to use the MCP with headless tools like Claude Code running from the CLI in CI/CD. I could see two options potentially:

  • Use a Jira or Confluence API token
  • User OpenID Connect flow, similar to how you can authenticate with AWS via OIDC from GitHub

However, I don't see anything in the documentation that indicates either of these will work with the official Atlassian MCP. Is there any way to call this MCP from CI/CD workflows?

Hi @gary_bisaga_powerschool_com ,

I believe official MCP for Confluence, Jira and Rovo currently supports OAuth 2.0 authentication only and that API tokens and OpenID Connect (OIDC) are not supported for authenticating with the Atlassian MCP.

However, I'm no expert here, so I'll move this question to the appropriate app/feature group for other experts to chime in.

Cheers,
Tobi
