How to remove duplicates in a list view when trying to view with "Show Hierarchy" toggled on?

We have a project with a simple Epic-Task-Subtask hierarchy. When viewing in a list view and with "Show Hierarchy" toggled on, both Epics and Tasks show in the list. If I expand an Epic, it correctly shows the children Tasks, but they are now duplicated in the list. Each child shows under the parent Epic, and then again in the the root of the list. If the Task is selected, then the duplicate also shows as being selected. This is very confusing for the user. Is there a fix or configuration change or anything to avoid having this happen? We are running team managed projects on jira cloud.

Hi @Steve Russell , this is a Jira Cloud List view regression rather than a configuration issue. Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Atlassian has logged JRACLOUD-99329 for this exact behavior: with Show Hierarchy enabled, a child work item appears under its parent and again as an independent row. The related JRACLOUD-99336 also confirms the duplication in team-managed spaces.

The two rows represent the same underlying work item, which is why selecting one also selects the other. Do not delete either copy.

There is currently no documented workaround that keeps the hierarchical view without duplicates. If you need a clean view for now, turn off Show Hierarchy and use the flat list. There is no need to change the Epic, Task, or Subtask relationships.

If I understand correctly then this is what the Show hierarchy function does and you can’t do anything about it. This is how it’s designed.

Have you tried using Timeline? It should work better but of course it’s a different view.

You could try to play with grouping (by work item for example) and/or filtering but it won’t create such a hierarchical view.
