How to Change or Remove Placeholder Text for Fields like "Affects Version" and "Fix Version"?

Hello Community,

I'm currently working with Jira (Data Center), and I've noticed that fields like Affects Version, Fix Version, Components, and Labels display the default placeholder text:
"Start typing to get a list of possible matches or press down to select."

I'd like to either change this text to something more custom or remove it entirely to better suit our team's workflow. However, I haven't been able to find a clear way to do this.

Questions:

  • Is there a native way to modify or remove this placeholder text in Jira?
  • If not, what would be the best approach to achieve this (e.g., ScriptRunner, JavaScript, CSS)?
  • Are there any risks or side effects I should be aware of when customizing these fields?

Your guidance and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance! 😊

Hi @Ivan

unless you have any Plugins installed that would provide such a text, this is the Field's description.

You cannot edit the System Field's description unless you do some Database hacking. I've done changes to Locked Fields before but never to System Fields. I wouldn't recommend touching those.

You can overwrite the description texts with Scriptrunner Behaviours.
