Hi Atlassian Community!

We’re excited to announce custom onboarding for Jira Cloud. Welcome new site users with a tailored experience and set them up for success from day one. Available in Jira Premium and Enterprise Plans.

Custom Onboarding Overview.gif

What is custom onboarding?

As a Jira site admin, you can now create tailored onboarding experiences to reflect your company’s unique ways of working with best practices and important resources. Custom onboarding provides:

  • Personalized welcome experience: Greet new users with a custom message, useful links, your company’s branding, and a cover image or embedded video that introduces them to their team’s way of working.

  • Role-specific guidance: Create onboarding experiences for 14 different roles, including Marketing, Software Development, Design, Product Management, and more, so everyone sees information relevant to their job.

  • Embedded resources: Add links to your organization’s internal documentation to help people find what they need to work effectively in Jira.

  • Actionable insights: Track engagement with your onboarding experiences using built-in analytics, so you can see what’s working and continuously improve your approach.

Use case examples:

Custom onboarding is at the site level, so focus on information that would help all user who select a role such as marketing or software development.

Use to provide best practices how the company plans and tracks work

And many more:

  • Where to find the internal knowledge base
  • How to get help from company support portal
  • How to request permission or a new Jira Space
  • Work hierarchy for the site or custom work items new user need to know.

How do I get started?

As a Jira site admin, go to Settings > Jira Apps (formerly Products). Select Custom onboarding

FAQ

What do my users see if I don’t create a custom onboarding?

Then there's no change to the current first run experience.

Can I change the roles users select from?

This releases uses the 14 role categories the new users already select from during the first run experience today.

Does this impact my how users get access to Jira?

No. Custom onboarding is an informational experience when a user first logs into the Jira site. There is no change in how they are given access to the site.

Why don't I see custom onboarding yet in my admin settings?

Check your release tracks. Custom onboarding will be available to all Continuous release customers by Oct 3rd 2025. Bundled release users will get access a month later in November.

🔈Got feedback?

We want to hear from you! Use the feedback button in custom onboarding to share your suggestions, feedback and use cases to the product team directly.

Thanks @Dominic Williamson - i am sure this will be really useful!

Now to think of the best way to approach this, provided we have differant teams in differant regions, yet all cross functional too :D

Thanks
Yatish

OK so it's a customizable welcome pop-up... Still helpful and exciting.

I was hoping for something a bit more interactive. I remember there being an app by Atlassian called 'Training for Jira' allowing custom course content for training your users on your bespoke setup of Jira and how to use it... Where did that go?

Could we have the access to create custom Quickstart guides that you use to guide new users through using the product?

To be able to truly guide our users through how WE use Jira at our company including highlighting crucial custom fields / processes would a real value add and reduce the need for additional training.

Does it impact the Customer experience in JSM, or is it only fully licensed Jira / JSM Agents / Confluence users?

Hi @Dominic Williamson

Just adding to @James Rickards _SN_ comment,
I am also interested in knowing whether the users from the approved domain who would automatically get an Atlassian Account with the Customer role in JSM will be impacted or not.

Additionally, can users access the custom boarding later on (let's say they skipped it in the first place)?

Kind regards,

Milad

Much appreciated! Onboarding is often overlooked by many organizations, leaving new personnel feeling lost in their day-to-day work, especially when they’re new to a specific technology, software, or tool.

This initiative is a great step toward strengthening operational and in-the-role onboarding. It’s great to see more work being developed in this direction. Thank you for this one!

Question about applying and using the roles which are assigned to the onboarding experience.

In relation to:

Can I change the roles users select from?

This releases uses the 14 role categories the new users already select from during the first run experience today.

Can we change this if and when a user selects one we haven't assigned to an onboarding experience or their role changes down the line?

Where is this configured @Dominic Williamson ?

I am a Jira admin (as well as Site admin) and as of 2025-10-30 I still do not see the Custom Onboarding option in our production tenant even though we are on the continuous release track. I do see it in our sandbox tenant though.

Thank you, @Dominic Williamson this supports companies and teams significantly in encouraging users to adopt the tools and take their initial steps on the Atlassian platform.

@Sarah James the 14 role categories are pre-configured. As an admin, you can select one or multiple roles to create a custom welcome. This is a first-time onboarding into Jira experience, so if a user changes roles, they won't see the first-time selection screen again for their existing Jira account. Full documentation on where it is configured is here: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/set-up-custom-onboarding-for-your-users/

@Rick Westbrock to check the release to your site, from your Admin Hub (admin.atlassian.com) navigate over to Platform experiences -> App updates to see the status of updates for your Jira site. Hope that helps!

Thank you @Dominic Williamson I was unaware of the App Updates list previously. This one still shows Rolling Out with a start date of 2025-10-31 so I guess I just need to wait another week or two for it.

Thanks @Dominic Williamson but there isn't anywhere we can edit or modify these roles once a user assigns it to themselves right?

So if someone chooses one of these roles we haven't assigned to the onboarding experience, they just won't get what we expect them to right?

Is there a reason this config specifically was used instead of groups, roles or teams that an admin can configure for a new or existing user (for more control over the config)?
