Coming Soon: Control how hierarchy is displayed when filtering in Jira Software Timeline

What's changing

We're introducing a new inline hierarchy toggle to the Jira Software Timeline. This gives you more control over how work items are displayed, especially when timeline view level filters are active.

After this update, filtered results will display in a flyout hierarchy modal OR inline hierarchy showing Epics and their immediate children and you can switch between them using the new toggle.

Flyout Hierarchy

When we will introduce this

We are actively working on this and looking to deliver this in a couple of months this year.

Things to know in Inline Hierarchy

  • If Show inline hierarchy is turned ON, subtasks will not appear in your filtered results. They are hidden until you toggle the setting OFF to see them in flyout mode.

  • Show inline hierarchy will set to turn OFF automatically if you start hierarchy level to above Level 1 (higher-level work type than Epic/Workstream). Filtered results will always show as a flat layout with flyout hierarchy mode in this configuration.
  • Work items without parent (standalone items) and subtasks will only be displayed when the list is in flat layout (Show inline hierarchy is turned OFF)

Why we made this change

This update is part of the Timeline Harmonisation initiative, which aligns the Software Space and Business Space Timeline experience with how teams actually structure their work in Jira.

We heard from teams that the flyout mode could be hard to navigate when filters were applied. This change gives those teams another way to view work items with full hierarchy context.

Nice improvement! šŸ‘ I can definitely see inline hierarchy making filtered Timeline views much easier to understand.

Also good to call out that standalone work items disappear when inline hierarchy is enabled - I can imagine that catching a few users by surprise at first 😊

I like this improvement, very easy to configure and navigate.

This feature is rolling out gradually to Jira Software timelines. We’d love to hear your feedback. šŸŽŠ
