A consistent flagging experience in the work item

We’re excited to announce an upcoming improvement to the work item flagging experience in Jira software spaces, rolling out in January 2026!

What’s changing?

When adding or removing a flag for a work item from board, backlog, or using the command palette in the work item, you can add a comment to provide context. This option wasn’t available when adding or removing a flag from the More actions (…) menu in the work item.

This feature closes that gap. Now, no matter where you flag a work item from, you’ll have the option to add a comment.

Our goal is to make managing projects in Jira a seamless and enjoyable experience. Stay tuned for more updates, and let us know your feedback.

Whilst adding a comment is useful, what I and many others have asked for is the ability to have types of flags such as "blocked", "escalated", "needs discussion at standup" as this would reduce the number of status and/or columns we need in the workflows/boards. It would be fantastic if the type of flag could be coloured and have an icon of the highlight on the flag.  Bring on the colours!

I agree with @James Rickards _SN_

This is a nice feature that could help us not having a hundred different "Blocked by..." statuses/columns.
