Bitbucket multi-region architecture and EU data residency coming soon

Dear Bitbucket community,

We want to share updates on what our teams have been focusing on, what’s coming next, and what these changes mean for you.

Bitbucket Cloud is investing in a new multi-region architecture backed by the Atlassian Cloud Platform. This new sharded architecture focuses on:

  • Improving service reliability by reducing single points of failure,

  • Offering data residency in the EU and US regions, with India to follow.

Why this matters

Bitbucket Cloud currently runs out of a single region. When one large workload spikes, it can degrade performance for everyone else on the platform. Furthermore, customers in regulated industries or regions like the EU have strict requirements about where their data lives. These requirements have also made it difficult for some Bitbucket Data Center customers to move to the cloud.

What this means for you

We are re-architecting the platform to allow deployments across multiple regions. These changes will help us meet GDPR and regional data sovereignty requirements. Data Center customers can migrate to the cloud with confidence, knowing their data is hosted in their region of choice.

Additionally, we will soon offer:

  1. Early Access Program (EAP) for EU data residency (December 2026). Eligible customers can provision new workspaces in the EU region by enrolling into the EAP program.

  2. EU data residency for new workspaces (March 2027). Enterprise customers can provision new workspaces in the EU region. New workspaces on the Premium plan can pin data to the EU region after provisioning (restrictions apply).

  3. India data residency EAP (June 2027). Offered to eligible customers for new workspaces only.

  4. EU data residency general availability (September 2027). Available for new and existing workspaces on the Premium plan.

Watch Bitbucket public roadmap for upcoming updates.

Current limitations

These changes come with a few limitations you should be aware of:

Repository transfers: Workspaces created after October 12, 2026, may be restricted to transfer repositories between workspaces. Workspaces that require EU data residency cannot transfer repositories to workspaces located in different regions. When an Administrator attempts to transfer a repository between workspaces where the limitation exists, they will be presented with an error:

Workaround: If you need to move a repository between regions, you can use git clone --mirror and push it to the desired destination. Follow the steps in the Bitbucket help documentation or the official git documentation. This method transfers your entire repository history, branches, and tags. Metadata: pulls requests, artifacts and comments will remain with the original repository.

Connect apps: We announced the deprecation of Connect apps earlier this year. Workspaces created after October 12, 2026, will no longer have access to Connect apps. Connect apps will not be available in EU or India regions. We are working with vendors to transition their apps to Forge as soon as possible.

  • To see the list of Connect apps currently installed for your workspaces, navigate to Workspace Settings > Apps and Features > Installed Apps > see the list under Connect apps section.

  • For 3rd party apps developed by partners, you can expand the app details section and go to marketplace listing. Please use the vendor contact information under the support tab to let them know that you are interested in a Forge equivalent of their app.

  • Compass app will be maintained for existing customers until December 31, 2027, however we no longer allow new installations.

  • If you built a custom Connect app in the past, we encourage you to transfer it to be a Forge app. You can follow our getting started with Forge guide or migrate to Forge and leverage Atlassian cloud platform for better app extensibility and integration.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for being a valued Atlassian customer.
