What are the "dots" on the issue cards in a sprint?

I'm very new using JIRA.  What are the "dots" that are at the bottom of the issues that are in a sprint?  They differ in the number of dots.

It could not have been easier for you to find that similar issue rather than just saying "the number of days an issue has been in that column" <3

I think Thomas is trying to encourage more search before requesting help, which involves more parties to do the work.
