Since upgrade to 4.3, IE users not seeing some images

Steve White September 10, 2012

We upgraded to Confluence 4.3 from 4.1.4, and we notice that some images are not visible to Internet Explorer users. These include a few user profile icons, which is a minor point. Much more serious, none of the images from Balsamiq plugins appear. What appears is the red X, which is Internet Explorer's symbol for a missing image file. IE users can edit the Balsamiq plugins fine, but the results do not appear when viewing the page.

We have upgraded to the latest Balsamiq plugin version (2.2.1) which hasn't resolved the issue.

Hi Steve,

I think this might be due to images being stored in the Confluence database with the incorrect mime type. Since Confluence 4.3 there is a header directive called "nosniff" which has been added, which directs the browser to not try to figure out the mime type itself and just trust what the web server sent.

IE9 seems to be stricter than other browsers on this, so if there is any image that has the wrong mime type for the data contained inside, then it will show up as an "X" missing image icon instead of displaying.

To get around this, you can upload the images with the correct mime type and extension.

I've raised a bug for this if you'd like to cast a vote on this: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-26848

Regards,

David

What is your IE version and Windows version? I can try to check if the user profile icons issue is reproducible. Regarding the issue with images from Balsamiq plugins, you may want to raise it to the Balsamiq community at: http://community.balsamiq.com/balsamiq. Also, you may check out this thread in case the issue is related: http://community.balsamiq.com/balsamiq/topics/all_images_not_found_on_mockup_import_even_if_corresponding_images_uploaded
