Need to create projects with key >10 characters

Lars Lundegård October 23, 2012

I have serios troubles with this limitation in Jira 5.x:

*Project key length restricted to 10 characters for new projects*

When creating new projects, the project key length is now restricted to a maximum of ten characters. This will not affect existing projects.

We have a rule of naming our Jira projects after the products which the issue relate.

We have 400+ products and more than half of the have key (Product ID) longer than 10 characters.

This is a naming rule we have had since the beginning of using Jira, and it is catastrophic for us that we know are limitet to the magic number 10.

This means that we can't add our new products into Jira, now when we have upgraded. (I couldn't force in my mind that this limitation could happen so I didn't notice it until after our upgrade)

Please note that from JIRA 6.x, the character limit can be configured.

We're stuck at the moment. You can imagine you're not the first to hit this rather significant failure for existing users. It's logged at https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-28577 and probably better discussed there, as a way to encourage Atlassian to fix it.

Thanks for the directions, Nic. I added my case to that thread.
