Migrate and Upgrade

Shane Shelley September 18, 2012

hi, we currently have installed Confluence version 2.9.1 installed running on Solaris and postgress. Our aim is to upgrade to the latest version (currently 4.3) and migrate to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows Server.

Can you please advise on the upgrade path.

kind regards

Shane

Hi Shane,

thanks for clarifying. Actually the process of using the XML is the best for migrating between databases, but you won't be successful uploading an XML from 2.9 to a 4.3. You must first generate an XML in 2.9 and import into another 2.9 using the MSSQL DB. Then you can upgrade confluence in that server using the new database.

I hope this helps.

Hi Shane,

Something important to note is that since you're planning on upgrading from a 2.9.* version, you NEED to take some intermediary steps in order the upgrade to succeed, so you can't simply restore a 2.9
1 XML backup into a 4.3, it will definitely fail.

In this case, the upgrade path should be: 2.9.1 > 3.0 (introduces a new license version) > 3.5.17 > 4.3 by following the upgrade instructions outlined in https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Upgrading+Confluence.

Hope
this helps.

An simple upgrade path could be:

  1. Set your new server
  2. Create the new database
  3. Take an XML backup of your current Confluence instance
  4. Install Confluence 4.3 in the new server
  5. When prompted, load the data from the XML back up

Please take this as a personal advice: Why are you willing to migrate to a Windows server? I personally preffer *nix platforms and Postgres to MS SQL.
