Making fields manatory

We would like to make one of our field (error type) mandatory. I know this is no problem, but we only want it to be mandatory when the issue is closed, not when it is edited in any other way. Is there a way to get an error for this field, whenever it is not filled, but only when the issue is being closed?

Not really. Mandatory fields are configured by field configuration, which applies throughout the lifecycle.

Most of us install plugins that provide "field must be filled in" *validator* functions for a transition and use them on the "close issue" transitions, but you are going to need to find and install one (or write one!). I tend to use the one in the Jira Suite Utilities
