We usually added the daily Dilbert strip to our dashboards. This helped to increase the number of returning users and made the employees smile in the morning... That's why we've included a Dilbert macro in our Custom Dashboards plugin. You may also find some design tips from the screenshots of the plugin:
Here's another dashboard we made with the Custom Dashboards plugin, using the included Forecast macro (for displaying the current weather), the News Slider and News Teaser macros from our News Teaser plugin and the Polls macro from our Polls plugin:

currently we experimenting with some news focued dashboard variations. To do this you can use the cute plugin. There is an extension for this plugin which is kind of finished.
With this Dashboard Extension you can show up teaser images at your blogposts by simply adding an image with the name "teaser*.*" (stars are wildcards).
Next to the Teaser News we show up the last changes of the confluence system.
