How to handle plugin upgrades during JIRA Upgrade

We have Confluence server v5.8.14 and we want to upgrade to v6.1.2.

Can we do the upgrade directly to v6.1.2 or should we upgrade first to the next major version - 6.0.1, and only then upgrade to 6.1.2?

Direct upgrade to 6.1.2 might cuase failure or other issues?
