creating a gantt with Jira tickets

yaarit rosenfeld February 18, 2018

Hi, I need to create a Gantt from a board I have with Jira tickets.

From what i can see after my searches is that if I want to create a Gantt I have to use some add-on.

Is there any way or feature in Jira that can create a dynamic Gantt ?

If there is no way, can you please recommend me in the best add-on for Gantts? - it doesn't need to be with the most features but more simple for use and allow me to see the "bigger picture" when i manage the project ? also i guess it should be able to be updated every time i update the Jira tickets.

Thank you

Hi Yaarit, yes, you need a separate app for Gantt chart in Jira. Try a few of them - even when they cost money, they are effectively free for 30-90 days. I'd obviously recommend our BigGantt https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1213016/biggantt-gantt-chart-for-jira, as it's mature now since it's been present on the market for a few years now. BigGantt keeps in sync with Jira both ways.

How to pick the 'right' Gantt chart plugin for Jira is another question ;) One proven way is to check the 'Version history' tab of each candidate such as here: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1213016/biggantt-gantt-chart-for-jira/version-history

Dozens of versions visible in the 'Version history' tab is a good sign, namely a developer keeps the app up-to-date both with new Jira releases and with users' requests. Happy Gantting!

Hi Yaarit,

Jira does not have Gantt Charts out of the box. There are a number of apps on Atlassian Marketplace that provide Gantt Charts.

I can't really advise about which is the best, because I'm biased -- we are the creators of one of the solutions, Structure.Gantt. We tried to make it very flexible and at the same time simple to use. It is based on live data from Jira, so it updates immediately after the changes are made to Jira tickets, without page reload.

Check out this short video to see if this is what you need: https://youtu.be/dBuPMkbk5pU

Also, we have a live sandbox server where you can play with the latest version to get a feel of what it is: http://alm.works/gantt-demo

Let me know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Igor

BigGantt  by the same vendor also does gantts and is what we use. Big picture provides other functions that may be helpful but if not, you’ll pay more for Picture.

Compare BigGantt to BigPicture here: https://softwareplant.com/biggantt-vs-bigpicture/

We are seeing customers buying BigPicture even when they say 'I just need Gantt chart'. One reason is that the price of BP is not 'that much' higher. Another is that experienced project managers have that feeling that they would later need resources and roadmapping modules of BP. In 90 per cent of cases it's better to have a single well integrated project management app for all needs.
