Pivotal import created duplicate users, how to merge?

I imported Pivotal in JIRA, and now I have duplicate users, who cannot be deleted because the imported ones have issues assigned and the ones that were already there also have projects. How can I merge those users? (Or forcefully delete them)?

You need to update the issues to change the reporter or assignee to the permanent user id and then delete the user. You can either

  1. Run individual queries and use bulk edit to update the field
  2. Automate using something like How to use runFromIssueList and other JIRA Command Line Interface actions
