Migrating multiple JIRA projects from one production instance to another

Divya Yathagiri Venkata December 22, 2017

Hi,

We are planning on migrating all the projects from one JIRA production instance to another production instance. Eventually, we want to have only one production instance - that's the reason for migration. So, there are around 13 projects in this instance from where we want to migrate to the main production instance which has several projects. What's the best way to do this? Also, can we change the project key and project name of the projects while migrating it to the other instance. Both the instances are production.

Also, we use several add-ons like Zephyr, Structure etc. Would all the data be imported too?

Thanks!

Hi Divya,

I'm from Botron, the folks behind Configuration Manager for Jira. :) Here is a list of 3rd party add-ons supported by CMJ

If you are going to be using Configuration Manager for migrating those projects, feel free to contact us at support@botronsoft.com or Service desk and give us more details about your use case. The devs will look into it and give you advice on how to proceed. They typically reply within few hours, so if you want to get an early assessment as to how this migration can be performed, ping us :-)

Cheers,

Bianka

P.S.: Thanks for suggesting CMJ, Daniel :)

Hi Divya,

Moving projects can be a big job. You're going to want to use a plugin to assist you moving that many projects.

There are a couple existing guides to the two most commonly used plugins for this:

To answer your question about plugins.... it depends highly on the plugin itself. If the plugin stores data on issues in custom fields, that data will copy across. If the plugin uses its own table in the database, that won't be in a typical export/import. In the second case, you'll want to see if the plugins have export options available or check with Botron/Project Configurator to see if they support export/import for those plugins. Each plugin will need to be evaluated separately.

Cheers,
Daniel

Thanks for the response!

How about changing the project key and project name while migrating the projects to the new instance?

If you use Configiration Manager plugin then you can choose migrate to a new project option and provide a project key and a project name.
