How to tell which fields specific Jira issue types can use?

Is there a way to find out exactly which fields a specific Jira issue type can use? For instance, can you find out what field types a Bug issue can use?

For some reason, an API call for a Bug issue type is not working for a certain custom field, even though the value put in appears valid.
