How to see user-group-members as a non-system-admin?

As a project lead I can manage permissions by adding users and user-groups to project roles.

However, I cannot see what users are contained in a user-group.

Is there a way to see group members when I'm not a system-admin?

Yes. Under Global permission  -> Browse Users permission should be enabled to you (means to the group which you are part of).

If you have browse user permission, you will get user icon next each user picker. by clicking on this you will get below screen. From there , you select group and check the users.
