How to export JIRA data to Excel

I am looking into a way to pull data from JIRA into Excel without having to export a csv file every time.  Is there a way to automate this without any plugins?

If you know you're not going to have permission issues trying to connect to Jira from your organisation, you can try using the tips provided here:

Unfortunately, when I tried this approach, I'm faced with an "Access to the resource is forbidden" message. I'm pretty sure this is down to restrictions within my organisation though more than anything else. I can connect to the Jira website and authenticate as normal, but not via Excel. Go figure...
