There must be a bug in Jira, since there is no option to set it to None in the list. As a workaround you can do the following to clear the default value:

  • Create new value for the custom field
  • Set this new value as the default
  • Delete the new value

There's no bug in Jira, and there's no need for this "workaround" - and it actually breaks your data, as well as not being needed because there's nothing to work around.  This has not changed in 20 years, let alone the last five since the question was asked.

I'm having the same issue. There is no "None" option to use as default.

In another article is says to click the value again to unselect it, but that doesn't work either.

Had to delete the value which then cleared it from the Default.

Go to the field setup under admin -> custom fields, configure the field, and remove the default.

I can't remove it, only assign another option. Is there a way to remove it?

There is an option for "none" as a default value.  Should be at the top of the list.
