Changing the type of custom field from multi Select to Single Select

Question

Hello we have a custom field which is "Multi-Select" type and wanted to convert this to "Single  Select". Is this possible? I do know that we can create a new custom field (Single Select) with a different name ,do bulk copying from the old field to the new field and delete the old custom field and rename the new custom field to the name of the old custom field. However this will break all the existing filters which uses the old custom field as the custom field ids will be different.

Can you please help how we can do this so that it does not break our existing  filters?

the process you followed for copying the fields and has to validate the filters, automations, or external scripts/scripts in post functions for this project and then doing the reindexing could help.
