JIRA REST API Basic Authentication with --key curl option

This question is in reference to Atlassian Developer Documentation: JIRA REST API Example - Basic Authentication

Is there a way to add an SSH key to a JIRA account in order to authenticate with the --key curl option to avoid sending the user password when using the Basic Authentication method?

Thank you.  I think I need to switch to OAuth authentication for better security.
