Swimlane report showing a grid of Components vs Version, listing the Stories

Hi, I am trying to building board or a report that shows user stories in a grid:

* Versions from left to right

* Component from top to bottom

This would allow the rest of the organisation (but particularly product marketing, sales and senior management) to have a breakdown of functionality as a roadmap. 

Can this be done? Or does it require an add-on or a gadget? eg Gantt-Chart for Jira

That display is not a "board" in Jira-speak.  A board's columns are are a representation of where an issue is in the process you are mapping in Jira.  (Equally, "swimlane" has a very specific meaning and is not what you are looking for here)

To get a grid view like you want, yes, you will need apps.  The one I've had the most success with is Comala's Canvas, which lets you use almost any field for each axis of a grid-board.  It's available for both Server and Cloud -  https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211683/comala-canvas-for-jira?hosting=cloud&tab=overview
