Start with a simple filter for "Issuetype = story", save it and give it a good name.
Then use it in dashboard gadgets. The most simple one would be a "filter statistics" gadget with that filter and "label" selected as the statistic. You'll get an instant bar chart showing the numbers of issues using each label.
