User mentions not working properly

When I want to mention a certain User, I have to write nearly the whole name to get a suggestion. 

Until the first suggestions come up the pop up (as seen on the picture below) it is stateing that there went something wrong. No person could be found. I should try it in a coulpe of minutes again.

I was working at another company a few months ago and there the suggestions came immediatly after typing the first one or two letters. 

What are the possible actions I can take? Does a new index help?

and synchronization the directories.
