Can inline comments plugin be installed confluence 5.5.2

Is inline comments plugin available for confluence 5.5.2 version. If yes, Are there any notable issues installing the plugin on 5.5.2 version or is it recommended to upgrade to 5.7.1. We have license for 500 users (confluence + questions) , Do we need to purchase if we use inline comments plugin as I believe confluence 5.71 ships with inline comments plugin by default.Thanks in advance

There's a bit of potential confusion here.

There is an addon that does inline comments for Confluence 5.1 and above.  It's called "Talk", but there may be others you could be talking about, but that's the only one I've seen.  If it is that one, then it's valid for all versions of Confluence from 5.1 upwards, as it says on the Marketplace page for it.

However, Confluence 5.7 implements in-line comments as part of the system.  It's not the Talk addon, it is internal, part of the core tool.

So, if you want inline comments in 5.5, you will need to buy Talk.  If you are happy to upgrade to 5.7, then you do NOT need to buy Talk (unless it offers you features you need that the native inline comments do not)

Nic, thanks for this info. One of my client's spaces (in which I'm working for the first time) is still at 5.5.x and I was wondering why I can't do inline comments, which are crucial to our workflow.

Hi Sriman and Nic,

Nic has answered the question. I'd just like to point out some unique useful features of Talk, which are not available in Confluence native inline comments. Among them:

  • viewing, managing and replying to Talk comments in 'Edit' mode;
  • collapsing of long comments and discussions;
  • setting default Space comments viewing permissions;
  • setting permissions for specific comments;
  • viewing all inline comments of the page at the same time on the right-hand sidebar;
  • updating discussions in real time;
  • figures in Talk icons indicate the number of comments in discussions,  and more.

You may take a look at the comparison our team's worked out and read our blog post on this subject. You can vote for new features or post your own feature requests for Talk here.
