Built a table with multiple rows and columns. Now I am unable to add rows. Why?

I started building a rather complex table of information on a Confluence page about a week ago. Everything was working fine until other contributors started adding to the page. Now I'm unable to add or insert rows. Why is this happening? What is the workaround?

I have found issues after merging cells. Try reverting to an unmerged-cell table:

1. Carefully select all the cells in the table
2. Add a new 1 X 1 cell table
3. Paste
