Would you use Confluence or WordPress for website creation? What are the pluses and negatives of each?

Both.  Confluence when I need a wiki, Wordpress when I need to throw up something less interactive and collaborative, but more flexible on layout and types of interaction (i.e. Confluence for content, Wordpress for the more social but less about sharing stuff)
