Restore data using system backup and import in Jira

Advanced
By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to:
- Describe system backup, import, and export
- Create a backup for Jira
Create a backup for Jira
Backups help you restore and recover data. You can store it locally or import it into a different Jira site.
You can export the following data to back up your site:
- Work items for both company and team-managed spaces
- Configurations, including schemes and fields
- Archived spaces
- Users
- User group settings
- Work item attachments
- User avatars
- Space logos
Jira overwrites (deletes) any previous backup file on this page when creating a new one. Backup files are automatically deleted after seven days.
You can back up your Jira data at any time. However, if you include attachments, avatars, or logos, you'll need to allow 48 hours between backups.
Only users with administrative permissions can perform backups and imports. Jira admins can only create backup files. Org admins can create backup files and import backup files.
To create a backup file for your site:
- In the top-right corner of Jira, select Settings (represented by a cog icon).
- Under Jira admin settings, select System.
- In the sidebar, under Import and export, select Backup manager.
- Under Back up for cloud, optionally select the Include attachments, avatars, and logos in the backup option to include work item attachments, user avatars, and space logos in the export file.
- Select Create backup for cloud.
- When the backup is complete, select Download cloud backup.
Restore from a backup
You can easily restore a backup. However, keep in mind that the import process overwrites existing data and configuration settings (including cross-application settings) on your Jira site.

Import work
In some cases, you may need to import work items from another source. For that, you can use the External System Import feature. You can import data from a CSV or a JSON file, or from a variety of external systems, such as Trello, Asana, Azure DevOps, or Monday. Jira provides a wizard that walks you through mapping and importing the data.
When you import Trello boards to Jira, the space template used will differ depending on which Jira app you can access. For more information, read Atlassian Support documentation.
