Enhance Compass with third-party apps

10 min

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Define the purpose of publicly accessible APIs in Compass.
  • Find existing integrations within Compass's available apps
  • Describe the role of installed apps within your Compass instance.
  • Evaluate the benefits of using Forge for application development in Compass.

What are Compass third-party apps?

The ability to link your Compass component to a third-party application depends on the availability of an app for that product within Compass. You can link your Compass component to a Slack channel created for that component. You can link Compass to repositories other than Bitbucket because apps are available for GitLab and GitHub repositories. If you need to link Compass to a product that doesn’t have a Compass app available, this might be your chance to create an app yourself using Forge. Forge is Atlassian’s serverless app development platform. Compass is equipped with publicly accessible APIs, which allow you to create a unique developer experience. You can leverage existing apps to enhance, customize, and elevate Compass, or utilize Forge's capabilities to build your own solutions. Compass integrates with various third-party apps to enhance its functionality and provide a more comprehensive developer experience.
👉 For example: Maybe your organization uses Slack as its internal communications app. There is a third-party app within Compass that enables component information to be communicated through a Slack channel within Compass, eliminating the need for context switching.
Maybe your organization uses Snyk to monitor component vulnerabilities. There is a third-party app within Compass that allows you to use Snyk to view and manage vulnerabilities for components within Compass.
Maybe your organization needs some functionality that is unique to your organization. Compass, equipped with publicly accessible APIs, allows you to create a unique developer experience. You can utilize Forge's capabilities to build your own solutions.
