Choose a space in Jira

10 min
Intermediate

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:

  • Differentiate space types, templates, and shared configurations
  • Choose a space template that meets your team’s needs

What's a space template?

Jira offers many pre-configured space templates that enable you to quickly meet many of your team’s needs. These templates have already configured work types, workflows, and other features intended for different use cases.
There are templates for software, business, and service spaces. Space templates also exist for different areas, like product management, design service management, event planning, and more.
👇 You can see the different categories of space templates in the left sidebar.

Explore available space templates

Space template and space type are separate, so you can choose many combinations of type and template.
👉 For example: You can have a company-managed or team-managed space that uses the Kanban or Scrum template.
However, some templates may only be available for one space type and not the other.
Both the space template and type will impact your configurations. Space templates provide pre-configurations. The space type determines how you can further configure your space. Team-managed spaces offer fewer configurations but more control over them, for users who aren’t Jira app admins. Company-managed spaces are much more customizable, but only Jira admins can create them as they share configurations called schemes.

Software space templates

For software space, there are four commonly used templates: kanban, scrum, bug tracking, and top-level planning.
👇 Click the boxes below to learn more about each of the software space templates.

Business space templates

For business spaces, there are different template sections for different areas, like HR, marketing, finance, design, legal, and sales. The business space templates and software space templates share a lot of the same functionality and are very different from service space templates.
👇 Click the boxes below to learn more about several common business space templates.

Service space templates

Most popular service space templates are only available for company-managed spaces, but there are also team-managed service spaces templates available.
👇Click the boxes below to learn more about each of these service space templates.

Create a Jira space from a template

Most of the time, you’ll want to create spaces from a template. However, you can also select blank space to create a space without pre-configurations. You create both blank spaces and templated spaces in the same place.
If you have permission to create a space in Jira, you can create a space from the sidebar by selecting Create space (represented by a + icon). You can browse the templates by Jira app or by category.
👇 Create a space to see the list of space templates.

To create a space:
  1. In the sidebar, select Create space (represented by a + icon).
  2. Browse the available templates, then select one.
  3. If prompted, choose the space type you want. You may not have a choice, depending on the template.
  4. Name your space.
  5. Create a space key or use the generated key.
  6. If available, select an Access level. This determines how other users and people can interact with your space.
  7. Click the Share settings with an existing space checkbox if you'd like — this is optional. This will copy the configurations in an existing space to your space.
  8. Select Create space.

Remember, even if you are able to create a space in Jira, you may only be able to create a team-managed space, not company-managed. You need to be a Jira admin to create a company-managed space.

Custom space templates

For Jira sites under an Enterprise plan, Jira admins can create custom space templates. These templates are based on existing spaces and help admins quickly spin up new spaces with consistent configurations.
Custom space templates let Jira admins:
  • Reuse company‑managed space settings (e.g. Workflows)
  • Reuse team‑managed space settings so that teams get a familiar setup every time.
Users will be able to select custom templates when creating a new space.

What is included in the space template?

When a Jira admin creates a custom space template, the following settings are included:
  • Boards
  • Work types
  • Fields
  • Workflows
  • Roles
  • Notifications
  • Permissions
  • Shortcuts
  • Issue security

Space templates don't include apps, automations, work items from the source space, enabled features, and feature‑level settings

To create a space template:
  1. Navigate to the source space (the space with the configuration you want to use as a template).
  2. Make sure you are in the Details tab.
  3. Select the more menu at the top (represented by ...) then select Save as template.
