Configure custom email addresses for an organization
5 min
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:
- Define what custom email addresses are
- Explain the steps for setting up custom email addresses
Use custom email addresses to personalize your notifications
Atlassian sends notifications from a default email address generated for a site, which is jira@<sitename>.atlassian.net, but you can set up a custom email address.
You can configure custom email addresses to allow the app admins to customize the sender email addresses for Jira notifications.
👉 For example: Acme organization can add support@acme.com as a custom email address that Jira space admins can use as the sender address of Jira Service Management space notifications.
Benefits of setting up custom email addresses
Setting up custom email addresses is actually setting up DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) for your organization, which has benefits.

Try it yourself
Go to admin.atlassian.com and select your organization to follow along.
There are three parts to configuring custom email addresses for your Atlassian apps.
Add an email domain:
- From the sidebar, expand Organization settings.
- Select Emails page.
- Select Add domain.
- Enter the email domain of the custom email address you will be using.
A list of DNS records will show that you will use to verify ownership of the domain.
This is different from domain verification to claim and manage accounts.
Add the DNS records to your domain provider:
- Copy the DNS records from the first step and add them to your domain provider as custom records.
- Go back to the DNS records list in Atlassian Administration.
- Select Run DNS records check to initiate the record checks. This is optional as a DNS record check runs every 24 hours to determine whether records match.
Provisioning can take up to 72 hours and once complete, the domain’s status will show as verified.
Add the custom email addresses:
- From the sidebar, expand Organization settings.
- Select Emails page.
- Make sure the Email addresses tab is selected.
- Select Add email address.
- Enter the email address you want to use. You can enter up to 10 email addresses.
- Select Add email address.
- Make sure the Available in app toggle is on.
The email address will now be available to use in Jira.
Once you add the custom email addresses and Atlassian verified the email domain, you will be able to use the email addresses within your Atlassian apps. Jira space admins select an email address for Jira notifications. They use the custom email address for notifications on a space by space basis via the Notification settings.
