Compare company-managed spaces and team-managed spaces in Jira

5 min

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:

  • Describe the differences between company-managed and team-managed spaces
  • Identify if a space is company-managed or team-managed
  • Differentiate what space admins can do in company-managed and team-managed spaces

Compare space types in Jira

The space type you use in Jira determines how different users can administer the space. It also determines which features and behaviors are available.
Team-managed spaces provide the team more independence in setting up workflows, permissions, fields, and other settings. They enable you to move quickly as they aren’t very complex. Your configurations only impact your space.
Company-managed spaces share highly customizable configurations with other spaces. These shared configurations, called schemes, allow greater flexibility than the settings available in team-managed spaces. Only Jira app admins can create company-managed spaces and implement many of the configurations, so space admins need to collaborate closely with their Jira admin.

These space types are used in Jira and Jira Service Management.

Determine the space type

You can see the space type for any space by clicking More actions next to its name in the sidebar. The type will be listed at the bottom of the menu that appears.
You can also see the space type on the All spaces page.
👇To see the space type, click More actions next to the space name in the sidebar.

Administer different space types

Though the same kinds of people are space admins for company-managed and team-managed spaces (think product managers, people managers, team leads, scrum leads, and more), the role in Jira is very different.
👇 Click the tabs below to learn more about the differences between team- and company-managed space admins.
To be a space admin for either team-managed or company-managed spaces, you need to have the administrator role for that space. The user who creates a space automatically has this role.

For company-managed spaces, the Jira admin who creates the space can add other users to the administrator role, designating them as a space admin.
