By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:
- Use the Insights feature in the backlog to plan smarter sprints
- Track sprint progress from the board view
- Optimize your delivery pipeline using insights in the deployments view in Jira
Discover insights as you work
Insights is a feature in Jira that gives teams a daily dose of information when and where they need it. Your team can plan smarter and take informed action in just a few clicks.
Insights are currently available for scrum and kanban metrics in both company-managed and team-managed spaces. You can find the insights feature in your team's board, backlog, and deployment views, right where key decisions are being made. Just look for the Insights button in the upper right corner of the window.
👇 Here’s an example of using insights from the board view.

Insights are sourced from board-level data and summarized to provide the team a holistic view of work. If your organization uses work item security schemes with company-managed spaces, your site admin will need to enable the aggregate data permission to gain access to insights. Learn more about aggregate data permissions in Atlassian Documentation.
While insights show you key metrics when you need them, sometimes more information is needed. That's when you can dig deeper with reports in Jira. Reports and insights weren't designed to be used exclusively. You can use reports and insights together to get the information you need to move your work forward.
Plan smarter sprints with insights in the backlog
Insights are available for any member of the team to view in the backlog. Find easy to read summaries of metrics when planning for the next sprint.
The sprint commitment insight helps teams plan the right amount of work, so they can predictably deliver on commitments. This insight monitors a sprint’s workload based on the performance of the past five sprints, and tracks whether the team is over or under committing, based on the recommended target.
Work type breakdown insight can help teams prioritize work in line with overall objectives. With this insight, the team can view at a glance the different types of work they’re taking on, for example, if they’re spending more time tackling tech debt or shipping new features.
👇 In the example below, the team is using insights in the backlog.

Stay on target during your sprint
When tracking sprint progress, you can find insights right in the board view of Jira.
The sprint progress insight shows how the current sprint is pacing towards your goal. With this insight, teams can see the percentage of work by status. This can help teams review progress during the team standup and stay on track.
The epic progress insight helps teams understand the current sprint's contribution to bigger streams of work, or epics.
👇 In the example below, the team is using insights in their sprint board.

Continuously improve as you ship
Optimize your delivery pipeline with insights found in the deployments view of Jira. Cycle time and deployment frequency insights help teams visualize and measure progress from idea through production.
👇 In the example below, a software development team uses insights in their deployments view. They can quickly see how many deployments they're shipping each day. They also see cycle time for work.
