By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:

  • Read and understand the Control Chart
  • See the cycle time for your sprint, product, or version
  • Describe how the Control Chart can benefit your team

What is the Control Chart?

The Control Chart shows the cycle time for your product, version, or sprint. Cycle time is the time spent working on a work item — typically, the time when work begins on an item to when work is completed.
The Control Chart maps the average time spent by each work item in a particular status over a specified period of time. This helps you identify whether data from the current process can be used to determine future performance.
👇 Here’s an example of a Control Chart.
The Control Chart in Jira.
Use the Control Chart when:
  • You want to analyze your team's past performance in a retrospective.
  • You want to measure the effect of a process change on your team's productivity.
  • You want to provide external stakeholders visibility on your team's performance.
  • You want to use past performance to set targets for your team.
You and your team can use the Control Chart to:
See outliers and investigate their cause to reduce them in the future.
✔ See if your team's efficiency is improving. A decreasing rolling average indicates process improvements.
✔ Predict how quickly your team completes work. You can narrow the standard deviation field through process improvements.
