- Identify the default user preferences
- Configure global user interface features
- Configure the look and feel of your Jira site
Customize the user experience in Jira
Jira provides options for modifying user settings and branding your site. You can also customize the language and time formats.
Here are some general Jira configuration tasks:
โ Customize the application title and email from header format
โ Set the default language
โ Set the default user time zone
โ Adjust other general configuration options, like enabling voting in Jira
To modify the general configuration settings:
- In the top-right corner of Jira, select Settings (represented by a cog icon).
- Under Jira admin settings, select System.
- In the sidebar, select General configuration.
๐ Modify the general settings from the System page.

Language settings in Jira
There are three settings that control which language Jira displays. Jira considers the settings in this order:
- Userโs profile settings in Jira
- Userโs browser settings
- Default language in Jira
In other words, if there's a language chosen in a user's profile, that's the language Jira will use. If not, Jira looks at the browser settings. If the browserโs language setting isnโt set, Jira uses its default language.
Most user-visible pages in Jira are internationalized and can be viewed in many different languages. To learn more about internalization settings, check out Atlassian Documentation.
Set the default user preferences
As a Jira admin, you can set default access, modify how emails appear to users, and choose how many work items appear on a page for all users.
To set the default user preferences:
- In the top-right corner of Jira, select Settings (represented by a cog icon).
- Under Jira admin settings, select System.
- In the sidebar, under User interface, select Default user preferences.

Users can overwrite defaults for email format and autowatch in their personal settings.
Configure the default dashboard
Jira admins can configure the default dashboard. This is the first dashboard users will see when they navigate to the dashboard section. Itโs a good idea to know which gadgets are available and which ones would make sense to place on the default dashboard.
To configure the default dashboard:
- In the top-right corner of Jira, select Settings (represented by a cog icon).
- Under Jira admin settings, select System.
- In the sidebar, under User interface, select Default dashboard. Configure the dashboard as needed.
๐ You can edit the default dashboard just like other dashboards in Jira.

Users may have different space access. This means different users will likely see different results based on assignments, access, and work item-level security. Keep this in mind when troubleshooting user problems.
Customize Jiraโs navigation colors, favicon, and logo
Jira provides options for branding your Jira site, including how to modify the look and feel of the navigation colors, favicon, and logo.
To configure the look and feel of Jira:
- In the top-right corner of Jira, select Settings (represented by a cog icon).
- Under Jira admin settings, select System.
- In the sidebar, under User interface, select Look and feel.
๐ Click the icons below to learn more about what parts of Jira you can customize.
