Color code cards on a Jira board
10 min
Intermediate
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:
- Differentiate cards with color coding
- List attributes you can use to color code work item cards
Configure card colors
The card colors feature adds a colored stripe to the side of a work item's card on the board. This enables you to quickly differentiate work items or see information about them.
👇 Depending on the criteria you choose, the left side of work items will be different colors. In the example below, each Assignee has a different color.
To configure card colors:
- Open your board.
- Next to the board name, select More actions (represented by •••), then Board settings.
- In the sidebar, select Layout, then Card colors.
- For the Method field, choose one of the options.
- Then, set each value to be a color using the color picker.
👇Here's how you configure card colors for your board.

What if a card meets several criteria?
If you select Queries, you’ll have to consider the order of your color criteria. The cards will be colored by the first query that they meet.
👉 For example: Let’s say you configure the first query to color all stories green and the second query to color all work items with sub-tasks blue. If you have a story with sub-tasks on your board, it’ll be green, as that’s the first query it meets.
Let's explore an example!
Pavol’s team wants to quickly differentiate if their work items relate to an internal report, an external report, or neither. They already use the Component field to track this information.
