Hi @StephanieC In general you can set up description in two places - in custom fields list and in field configuration. The field configuration is always on top of custom field default description. So I suggest to check Field Configuration of your project first end verify what description you have there.

There is even a ticket for that https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFSERVER-59160 But since you are saying that xls also do not work then it is pretty strange..
