@Boris Chigirintsev if you provide me more details I can try and help you get the issue resolved. Did you fully walk through options, up to and including completely reinstalling Sourcetree?
-
@fanmixco if you are receiving that error it is likely the app password you created does not have the create privilege scopes
-
@Ivan Lott for the case you want to just push to your Bitbucket Cloud repositories from different computers then you should only really need 1 app password; the username tied to it would be your Bitbucket Cloud username. However, you could technically make multiple app passwords and store each one on each different…
-
@Mert the README for the repo it appears you just need to create an app password to use for the BITBUCKET_APP_PASSWORD variable. This community post should guide you to be able to create an app password that'll you use for it
-
@paulbcon2426 you should be able to set up the dual push to remote again with vpusa. So long as you still have write perms to the repo you are pushing to (i.e. you are allowed to push to the repo) then your app password will allow you to still push to both remotes.

@maiconhcmachado if you provide me with some more details for your issue I can try and assist you.
-
@Ivan Lott I would suggest a password manager. That's what I personally use for my personal Bitbucket Cloud account. That way I don't have to remember my app passwords and I can sync my password manager across computers.
-
hey @paulbcon2426, I was wrong when I said you shouldn't be seeing this UI. This most likely a part of your Git credential helper configs (more details here). Given this is asking for credentials during Git over HTTPS authentication you will need to be using your app password. Can you please let me know if it works with an…
-
@paulbcon2426 are you executing these git commands via your terminal? Also, have you tried only pushing to one remote at a time and seeing if one of them specifically brings up that login UI?
-
@daniel_schielzeth there's no such thing as stealing open source information :) Thanks again for helping out!!!
-
@paulbcon2426 where is this UI module/page coming from? This should not be coming from an API call or Git over HTTPS from your terminal call.
-
@Matt Ipavec thank you very much for confirming this workaround fixed the issue for you and clarifying for future users that this is specifically for still using Basic authentication with the HTTPS protocol with an app password. Please let me know if you have any other issues regarding this.
-
@daniel_schielzeth many thanks. I have updated the post to include your quicker resolution.
-
@Shane Niebergall sorry for the disruption. Did you try all the steps including reinstalling? If you want to avoid reinstalling, I would suggest trying to use the OAuth authentication method instead? It's typically much easier to use and it should authenticate you by walking you through the Bitbucket Cloud login screens…
-
@mikemiller can you please provide more detail so I can try and help you. Where do you no longer have access to? Did you create an app password and use that in place of your account password? Are you trying to authenticate using Basic authentication with the HTTPS protocol for Git or for the Bitbucket Cloud API?
-
@Jesus Barrio app passwords do not work with email as username. You need to use your Bitbucket Cloud username in order to successfully authenticate so that you can sync. Please let me know if this works
-
@Scott Rowles if you want to avoid reinstalling I would suggest using the stated OAuth authentication method instead. It's much easier and should not require your to reinstall.
-
@shobhitpundir07 The Git GUI you are using is from the extension that isn't created or maintained by Bitbucket Cloud. Given they haven't maintained it in some time that is likely the reason they do not provide a good error message (I am guessing they are letting the exceptions/errors roll up and because this is a new error…
-
@Scott Rowles as the Sourcetree community post states this is Sourcetree for Windows bug and you need to walk through ALL the steps in order to resolve the issue you are experiencing. For most users on Sourcetree for Windows the issue is not resolved until they fully reinstall (if they want to keep using Basic…
-
@Hector as the README states you need to use a Bitbucket App Password. This community post should guide you to be able to create one you need.
-
@Scott Rowles are you using Sourcetree for Windows? If so, did you walk through all of the steps in this Sourcetree community post, including completely reinstalling Sourcetree?
-
@DhanalakshmiM can you please provide me more details so that I can try and help you. Where you are trying to authenticate from? Your terminal, Sourcetree, Visual Studio, or VS Code? Are you getting any other error message besides "Authentication failed"? Are you using your username or email address for username when…
-
@urias are you using Sourcetree on Windows? If that is the case then there is an issue with the Git credential manager that Windows uses that causes issues when updating credentials in Sourcetree on Windows. Currently, it appears the only way to resolve this issue is to do a full reinstall. I detail the steps to resolve…
-
@shobhitpundir07 it appears you are using Visual Studio 2019 and using this Bitbucket extension, correct? That extension is community created (and appears to no longer be maintained). We had another person have a similar issue (please…
-
@Musab Gulfam can you provide more details with your issue so that I can try and help you. Where are you seeing this "Authentication failed" error? In your terminal, while you try and push/pull/fetch from your Bitbucket Cloud repo or while trying to use the Bitbucket Cloud API, or somewhere else?
-
@shobhitpundir07 are you referencing VS Studio or VS Code extension?
-
@hogtownrocketsled great to hear. As I told David, thank you for your patience in dealing with this weird Sourcetree for Windows issue and taking the time to walk through the steps (including reinstalling) to get it resolved.
-
@Chris Silvey that's odd, to say the least, but we're glad you got it resolved. Please let us know if you experience any other related issues. Also, thank you for choosing Bitbucket Cloud to host your repositories. Happy coding!
-
@_JK_ Kalenowsky unfortunately, we don't have documentation that is as explicit as what you stated, "Atlassian App Passwords for Dummies". I personally wish we did :( However, let me try and help you quickly. If you are just using an app password for pushing and pulling from your local repositories on your computer to your…

@Chris Silvey sorry for the disruption. If you explain your issue I can try and assist you. Please let me know For clarification, the email we provided Monday, February 28, 2022, was not the only notification of this change we sent to customers. We have been notifying customers on multiple channels in hopes they would take…
