Using native Jira DC 10.3.26, is there a way, using Custom Charts, to measure 'Created v/s Resolved, by team (Labels) and show the average between the Created date and Resolved date, as a trend line?
Hola Karl,
You can get pretty close to what you're describing with Jira Data Center's built-in reporting, although combining everything into a single chart is where things get a little tricky.
Jira has two relevant dashboard gadgets. The Created vs Resolved Chart shows how many issues are created and resolved over time, while the Resolution Time gadget calculates the average time between an issue's creation and resolution dates. Both can use saved filters, which means you can create a JQL filter for each team's label and examine its results independently. Atlassian documents these capabilities here.
The limitation is that these are separate gadgets. I couldn't find a native way to combine the created and resolved counts, team labels, and average resolution time into a single chart with an additional trend line.
If you're referring to the Custom Charts for Jira Marketplace app rather than Jira's native charts, that's worth investigating separately. Its documentation describes a Time to Resolution calculation that measures the difference between the Created and Resolved dates. You can find that here.
One thing I'd want to establish before recommending a particular configuration is whether you're using the Custom Charts Marketplace app or only Jira Data Center's built-in reporting tools.
Also, when you say average between Created and Resolved, are you looking for the average number of days it takes each team to resolve an issue, plotted over time? For example, showing whether Team A's average resolution time improved from five days in September to three days in October?
That would help determine whether the native Resolution Time gadget, filtered by team, would be sufficient, or if you'd need something more flexible.
Thanks,
James
Hi @Karl Samson
The second half of this is covered natively. The Resolution Time gadget plots the average time between Created and Resolved per day, week or month for a saved filter. That is your trend line. Put it next to a Created vs Resolved gadget on the same filter and you have both views.
For the team split, make one saved filter per label, e.g. project = ABC AND labels = TeamA, and add the gadget pair for each. Neither native gadget can group by label inside a single chart, and there is no native way to overlay the average as a line on top of the created/resolved bars.
project = ABC AND labels = TeamA
One thing to check before trusting either chart: both use the Resolved date, which is only set when the Resolution field is filled. If your workflow closes issues without setting a resolution, the resolved side stays empty. project = ABC AND statusCategory = Done AND resolution IS EMPTY will show whether that is happening.
project = ABC AND statusCategory = Done AND resolution IS EMPTY
Hi @Karl Samson ,
Just to add to what James and Habib have already mentioned, if you're referring to the Custom Charts for Jira Marketplace app, I believe this should be possible, as the app is pretty flexible 📊
Without playing around and testing this particularly, I'd also recommend reaching out directly to the vendor through the Marketplace Support tab. Folks there are usually really helpful and should give you a hand with configuring these (or by suggesting some kind of workarounds) 👀
Cheers, Tobi
Thanks James. I think we want to means the average time overall, not by Team. But to show how many the Teams have 'Created / Resolved. Although, the option might be worth exploring? I think I will head down the two graph solution, unless the Vendor of Custom Charts can provide a single solution?
Regards,
Karl.
Thanks Tobi, that is my next port of call.
