Introducing the All-New Loom for Mac Desktop App 🖥

Kristie Riojas

We rebuilt the Loom for Mac from the ground up for faster performance, cleaner recordings, and more customizable camera bubbles, all optimized for macOS.

4K recording by default: crystal-clear, ultra-sharp video quality straight out of the box with silky-smooth frame rates.
Cleaner recordings: keep your videos polished and distraction-free by automatically hiding desktop icons and the menu bar from your final recording.
New bubble shapes, filters, and backgrounds: personalize your presence with fresh squircle, portrait, and landscape bubble shapes, instant camera filters, custom backgrounds, and smart edge-snapping.
Precise screen capture: drag to select and record the exact area of your screen you want to share, nothing more, nothing less. Plus all the same recording options you know and love.
Refreshed speaker notes: voice-to-text transcription, with a built-in teleprompter to keep you on track.
macOS15+ required for this new Loom for Mac desktop app.

Just a note that not everyone uses mac :P 😅

But generally this looks really cool with some nice improvements 🙂 Hoping to see the redesigned version on Windows as well 🤞

@Tomislav Tobijas Don't worry, we've got you 🤭. Keep an eye out for other major redesigns coming out soon! 👀

@Kristie Riojas I love all of the updates!

One change that I miss is the option to change my camera bubble to Use profile picture.

In the old version, I could hover over the camera overlay and switch it to a profile picture. I used this often. Most of the time I don’t need to be live on camera, but I still want a visual presence on screen, and my profile picture gave me that without having to worry about how I look that day.

The value goes beyond convenience:

Context for viewers: A face or avatar on screen signals who is talking, which helps people follow along, especially in walkthroughs and async updates where the viewer never sees me otherwise.
Human connection without the pressure: It keeps the recording personal, but removes the barrier of being “camera ready.”
Feedback for the presenter: Seeing the overlay on screen confirms that I’m recording and that my identity is attached to the video.

Without the option, my choices are to show my live camera every time or to have no visual of the speaker at all. Neither is a great fit for the many recordings where I want presence without being on camera.

Is this a deliberate change, or could it be an oversight in the redesign? If it was intentional, I’d love to understand the thinking. And if it’s something that could return, even as a setting, I’d gladly give more detail on how I use it.

Thanks for considering it,
Rob

@Rob Johnson thanks for sharing that context, that kind of thing is super helpful to hear! Our goal with the new Loom for Mac was to simplify a bit of the features, so not everything from the old version made it, but we're definitely open to adding any features that people want, and we'll definitely take that into consideration for future planning. Let us know what else you would like to see!

@Zach Waugh Thanks for the reply, and for taking the request seriously. I appreciate you saying you’re open to adding features people want.

I really, really miss the profile picture option in the camera overlay. For me it’s nearly a daily-use feature, not a nice-to-have. My current workaround is to set my background image as my profile picture and close the lens cover on my Logitech MX Brio. That only works with my external camera, though. My MacBook has no privacy cover, so when I’m recording on the laptop I don’t have a good way to get the same result.

Since the legacy Loom desktop app is still in place on Windows, any usage data on the profile picture option from that version could be a helpful starting point when weighing this. Even a rough sense of adoption would help support the decision either way.

Thanks again for your time or consideration.
